Tips for Care and Installation of MDF Mouldings

It is important to store all MDF mouldings flat, both for storage and on the job site. They must be placed up off the floor in a place where they will not be exposed to water of draw moisture.

Carbide tip saw blades and/or cutter heads are strongly recommended for ripping, cutting, or routing MDF.

Pneumatic fastening systems with the air pressure set at approximately 100 pounds work best. This should countersink most fasteners.

Fasteners that are recommended and work best on MDF are finer gauge coated staples with a crown on chisel point and ring shank or "T type finish nails." These types of fasteners prevent fiber raise and puckering around the nail head. Smooth shank nails are not recommended; however, the installer should consider carefully the method that best suits his/her particular application.

If the nail hole has a "volcanoing" appearance, it should be tapped lightly with a hammer until it is even with the surface of the trim.

MDF is a man made product on which face nailing is recommended as opposed to edge nailing.

A fast drying adhesive (60 seconds or less drying time) should be used when face niter cust are made around door and window casings.

Alternative installation for door and window casings would include the use of casing corner blocks. No glue is required for the type application.
